The first book in a popular dystopian series, The Hunger Games is a great read.  In the ruins of North America, Panem, District 12, and the main character Katniss all are present. Katniss is a teen girl, who hunts illegally outside the boundaries of her district to feed her fatherless family.  Her beloved younger sister Prim and their Mother live in a crumbling shack, along with most all other families in their district, District 12.  They live in extreme poverty, while the all-powerful Capital lives in a gleaming city.

On the day of the Reaping, the day that two children from all twelve districts between 12 and 18 are sentenced to fight to the death in an arena, while being broadcasted all over Panem, one  boy and one girl are forced to join the Hunger Games, in which there is only one survivor.

Suzanne Collins really draws you into each horrific event of The Hunger Games so much that you can practically hear the cries of each child in the arena.  Her fantasy is brought to life with each word.  The Hunger Games is suspenseful and traumatic, and will have your heart beating faster until the last page is turned.

The Hunger Games is gruesome and disturbing; definitely a book to ask a parent if you can read it before you start. This book is for the 5th grade plus age group.  But once you’ve finished The Hunger Games, check out Catching Fire, the next suspenseful chapter in the series.

Catching Fire, as the second book in the Hunger Games series, is not a disappointing sequel.  The Hunger Games are on again, and horrifying as ever. However, there is a new twist and Katniss is forced into another horrible position.  With each page a new trouble is unearthed and by the end, you’re positive Panem will never be the same.

The grand finale, Mockingjay, is just as fast-paced and phenomenal as the other two.  Quick and terrifying, you’ll never see the next event coming.
